The classic between Deportivo Cali and América, this Saturday in Palmaseca, has been one of the most difficult to direct in recent years, not only because of the state of the field, but also because of all the pressure on the referees in the previous days.
Wílmar Roldán was appointed to referee this match to replace Carlos Betancur, who had initially been appointed by the Arbitration Commission, but had to be changed due to threats.
Before that, both the president of Deportivo Cali, Marco Caicedo, and the team’s coach, Rafael Dudamel, complained about the appointment, arguing that he had a bad record against them.
Roldán had already had a refereeing challenge in the 22nd minute, due to a supposed penalty from John García that neither he nor the VAR considered a foul, when two plays came that ended with red cards.
(In context: The alleged penalty that Cali claimed in the game against America)
The first occurred in the 41st minute, when Aldaír Gutiérrez, from Deportivo Cali, went to the ground to fight for a ball with Yaliston Martínez, from América. In the sweep, the red player ended up hitting his rival in the face with his foot.
After reviewing the VAR, Roldán decided to expel Martínez:
In the 45th minute, Larry Angulo went to fight a ball in the line with Gutiérrez and, from what was seen on the video, he took it cleanly. Roldán did not consider it that way and not only called the foul and got the yellow card. Later, Angulo complained excessively and the judge ended up expelling him for a double warning.
❌ BADLY EXPELLED: Roldán is wrong, this was not a foul and he ends up admonishing Larry Angulo, all ball; later the player from America made a somewhat angry claim and there he got the second yellow, but all part of an error in the referee’s assessment #LigaBetplay pic.twitter.com/mzVLqJLENL
