Opposition leader Ozel called Turkey’s refusal of sanctions against Russia correct
The leader of the Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, called Turkey’s refusal to join sanctions against Russia correct. He expressed this opinion to the newspaper Aydınlık.
“I think Turkey’s balanced position in relations between Ukraine and Russia is correct,” the opposition spokesman said, adding that Ankara has taken on a mediating role instead of imposing sanctions on Russia.
Özel added that he approved of the fact that Türkiye “did not succumb” to US sanctions. He also called the implementation of the Montreux Convention correct, which allows Ankara to control the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits and not allow warships there.
On March 20, the United States and Türkiye agreed on the so-called sanctions harmonization scheme. She suggests that Washington will first notify Ankara of companies that could potentially be subject to sanctions for commercial activities with business from Russia. Next, the United States will request information on this matter. Türkiye will have to conduct an investigation and then report its results. If necessary, appropriate steps will be taken.
