Written and directed by Tomohisa Taguchi (Akudama Drive, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War), the title arrives today in addition 200 cinemas in a three-day special event, the 10, 11 and 12 June 2024. The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes is a romantic sci-fi mystery story based on the novel of the same name written by Mei Hachimoku and illustrated by the artist Kukka. The success achieved by the light novel led first to the creation of a manga and then of the feature film, characterized by the meticulous work of Satomi Yabuki (Tokyo Ghoul; Pompo, the cinephile), responsible for character design and chief animation supervisor, and the animation studio CLAP (Pompo, the cinephile).
The depth and complexity of the original work won over Tomohisa Taguchi, who chose to transpose the light novel into a film precisely by virtue of these characteristics. To demonstrate how much The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes is a unique work of its kind, the director declared how, despite having its roots in Japanese culture (the story is inspired by the legend of Urashima Taro), the story is capable of speaking to a universal audience: “In Japan, many stories – especially in anime – are about repressed heroes. SYNOPSIS
According to a legend, the Urashima tunnel allows, by crossing it, to obtain what your heart desires… but at a high price: a few seconds spent inside turn into several hours in real life! When Kaoru comes across the tunnel of legend, the boy thinks of Karen, a little sister he lost years earlier in an accident. Undecided about what to do, Anzu, a recently transferred student, convinces him to challenge space and time. But what will the young woman want from Kaoru? And what will the latter have left after the tunnel has finished with him?
