Tottenham Hotspur were the first team to win the UEFA Cup, the precursor to the Europa League, in its inaugural 1971-1972 season. Under the direction of Bill Nicholson, the Spurs demonstrated impressive consistency and solidity. Borussia Mönchengladbach, coached by Jupp Heynckes, had an exceptional campaign in the 1978-1979 UEFA Cup. The German team showed offensive and effective football, standing out at each stage of the tournament. In the final, they faced Red Star Belgrade, winning with an aggregate score of 2-1, which allowed them to lift the trophy without knowing defeat.

IFK Göteborg became the first Swedish team to win the UEFA Cup in the 1981-1982 season. Under the guidance of coach Sven-Göran Eriksson, the Scandinavian team beat big European teams with disciplined and tactical football. Ajax, known for its school of total football, won the UEFA Cup in 1991-1992 without losing a single match. With Louis van Gaal as coach and talented players like Dennis Bergkamp and Jari Litmanen, Ajax showed their class and talent.
