In the federal government they still do not have the slightest idea of how Ismael El Mayo Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopezhe most important drug lord and the son of El Chapo Guzman, They finished in a small plane in the small Santa Teresa Airport, next to El Paso, Texaswhere did they go arrested and prosecutedThey also don’t know what happened to Joaquin’s brother, Ovid Guzman who was in a Chicago jail and is no longer there, it was said in Mexico, that he had a change of precautionary measures, which in fact means that he became protected witness. The same path would be taken Nestor Isidro Perez Salas, The Nini and former head of security for the Chapitos.
There are countless versions circulating, none official, which is understandable because we are facing the largest intelligence operationin a game of mirrors and simultaneous deceptions, carried out by the United States against drug trafficking in decades, comparable to the death of Osama Bin Laden, with the similarity that neither the government of Pakistan then, nor that of Mexico now had the slightest idea of what happened, perhaps because both Osama and Mayo, according to the US security forces, had official protection spaces in Pakistan one, in Mexico the other.
Among the versions that circulate, some are implausible. Yesterday the El Mayo’s lawyer (the only one who appeared, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel He has only been seen in photos) has said that he arrived in the United States against his will and yesterday he added that Mayo had arrived with his security team to a place where Joaquin, Chapo’s son, was waiting for them, that they were surprised by six men dressed in military uniform, who tied him up by the feet and hands and put him in the small plane in which he arrived in El Paso, and that only Mayo and Jesus traveled there.
It is a narrative intended to argue tomorrow that the arrest was illegal, that it was a kidnapping like that of Dr. Alvarez Machain in the 90s and to legally invalidate the capture. In real terms it is implausible, to begin with, what happened to El Mayo’s security team? Did they not react, were they bought, were they killed and hidden, did no one notice anything wherever these events occurred? If it was a kidnapping, would only two DEA agents meet the plane at the Santa Teresa airport without any support as seen in a video, if that video is true?
Another theory is that the DEA negotiated with Jesús after Ovidio was arrested and managed to convince him to turn himself in and also to hand over El Mayo. In this way, says the WSJ and others repeat, El Mayo, trusting and without security equipment, got on a plane to supposedly see some land where he could build runways and ended up, deceived, in El Paso. It is implausible. El Mayo was in the world of drug trafficking for 50 years and at least half of them he was the leader of the most powerful and violent organized crime cartel in Mexico with a presence in at least 20 countries, 40 according to the US authorities.
El Mayo, who was especially distrustful and careful with his security, which is why he had never been arrested: would he have agreed to board a plane that was not his with Jesús, one of his godsons, but who was part of the Chapitos with whom he had been at odds for months? Would he travel without weapons, without guards, without any protection? It would be unusual. Let us remember, for example, in the much-cited interview of El Mayo with Mr. Julio Scherer in 2010, the number of security rings that the then director of the process had to go through to get to the interview. Would he be so confident now as to decide to fly alone, without guards, with a potential adversary on a plane and with a pilot who was not his? I don’t think so, it makes for a very good script for a future series, but it doesn’t sound true at all.
Did El Mayo surrender? It is very likely. The Washington Post wrote that El Mayo had “surrendered” and that seems logical to me, it makes sense: he is sick, facing off with his own cartel, including El Chapo’s sons, also with the CJNG, with groups from Sonora, with Aureliano Guzmán, he needs medical attention. His brother and his son are already protected witnesses, they have even testified against El Chapo, another son, El Mayito Gordo, pleaded guilty in San Diego and would be in the same situation. And the son who would supposedly remain in Mexico as his successor would be Ismael Zambada Sicairos, known as El Mayito Flaco or El Caballero, with a weakened structure, although he would maintain relations with Asian suppliers for methamphetamines and fentanyl, facing off with what remains of El Chapo and with Aureliano, El Chapo’s brother.
The surrender of El Mayo is credible, because part of his family has already done so, because he can guarantee his medical condition, because his wives (he is supposed to have six), other children and grandchildren could retain a certain patrimony and tranquility and not end up in the middle of a war that began in the Sinaloa cartel with the testimonies of King Zambada and Vicentillo in the trial of El Chapo.
If this is the case, and everything seems to indicate that it is, US intelligence would have, in a single operation with several variables, the biggest drug lord in Mexico, two of the Chapitos, the main fentanyl smugglers in the United States and the Chapitos’ head of security, all willing to become protected witnesses. The amount of information they will obtain will be as overwhelming as it will be politically devastating.
