A historical train
It was launched in 1984 and, since then, it takes a tour between Madrid and Aranjuez that recalls the first line of the Community of Madrid, and second line of the Peninsula, opened in February 1851 as part of a major project that would unite the capital with the Mediterranean.
The entry into service of this line had a great acceptance among the population, especially for the sending of the delicious products of the Aranjuez garden, among which the strawberry, which now reached the streets of the capital in a record time.
The project that gave rise to this trip to the past was a joint initiative of the Madrid Railway Museum of the Spanish Railway Foundation, the Community of Madrid, the Aranjuez City Council and National Heritage, with the support of Renfe.
The train is made up of four ‘Costa’ cars, a department car of the 5000 series and two vans-a J-2 and a DV-, with a total of 385 seats.
The ‘Costa’, built in the twenties with wooden box and open platforms with balcony at the ends, receive this denomination because at the origin they were allocated to the service of the Mza company in the Catalan coast. After being removed from the service in the 1960s, they were used in films of west movies and in 1984 they joined the strawberry train.
The BB-5045 second class car was part of one of the first series of metal cars commissioned by Renfe and built between 1947 and 1953. It has a side hall through which it is accessed to eight departments, with eight seats each.
The strawberry train is part of world heritage trains of the Community of Madrid, an offer of historical trains that link the capital with other cities of this community cataloged as world heritage by UNESCO, including Aranjuez.
