The storm floods some areas of Sitges and forces the Government to restrict mobility in nine regions

The storm of torrential rains has affected some areas of the southern half of Catalonia this Sunday, where flooding has been recorded and the Government has restricted mobility in some areas until Monday at noon.

The Catalan executive has prohibited travel in nine regions, where school and university classes have also been suspended. In the Terres de l’Ebre region, all primary care and all activities scheduled for this Monday at the Tortosa hospital have been suspended.

The number of students affected by the suspension of classes on Monday amounts to 126,587 students, which represents 7.9% of all students in Catalonia.

The storm that dumped between 50 and 90 liters this Sunday afternoon in Sitges (Barcelona) has flooded several streets, especially in the Terramar area. The showers have also been of torrential intensity in other nearby towns such as Sant Pere de Ribes (65 liters) and Vilanova i la Geltrú (between 30 and 55 liters).

The Generalitat Firefighters received around thirty warnings starting at 4:00 p.m. in this area of ​​the Garraf region, basically due to flooding in basements and garages or accumulations of water on public roads. Protecció Civil has sent an alert to the mobile phones of the residents of Garraf, Alt Penedès and Baix Penedès due to torrential and continuous rains during the next few hours.

The Civil Protection alert advises taking extreme precautions, avoiding unnecessary movements and staying away from ravines. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) has issued an observation warning for rainfall intensity in these three regions, where more than 40 liters can be exceeded in 30 minutes with showers accompanied by storms.

The regions with restricted mobility are Baix Ebre, Montsià, Terra Alta, Ribera d’Ebre, Baix Camp, Priorat, Tarragonès, l’Alt Camp and Baix Penedès. Civil Protection has also sent an alert to the mobile phones of people in these areas to ask for caution.

Renfe has suspended the circulation of regional lines to the south of Catalonia due to the complex weather situation in that area. To guarantee the safety of travelers, the Ministry of Transport has announced that from this Sunday night until 3:00 p.m. on Monday there will be disruptions to the trains that connect with the Tarragona district.

Specifically, there is no train service on the R13 between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Lleida; on the R14 between Plana de Picamoixons and Tarragona; on the R15 between Sant Vicenç de Calders, Valls and Reus towards Mora; on the R16 between Tarragona and Tortosa; and on the R17 between Tarragona and Salou-Port Aventura. The alternative road service established during the Roda de Berà works has also been restricted.

The bus service that had been established due to the works on the railway connection will be 40% during rush hour, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. this Monday; and 20% during the rest of the day.
