Russia can give an equally harsh response to the United States in the event of a threat to its security. Such a warning was made by a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Dmitry Belik on Friday, December 14, in an interview with Izvestia.
So he commented on the words of US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who said that Washington would react decisively if Moscow deployed its troops in Latin America.
“Now the United States has threatened a tough response, but our response can be no less tough in the event of threats to our security and further provocations,” the parliamentarian warned.
According to him, the Cuban Missile Crisis “reverberates through the corridors of the White House” to this day, and the US has long been accustomed to shaping the image of Russia as an external adversary in an attempt to distract the public from its own problems.
“Entire generations of American politicians were formed in fear of the return of Soviet and then Russian missiles to the US borders. The United States has long been accustomed to making our country the image of an external enemy, shifting the focus of attention from its problems to this side, ”he stressed.
Sullivan made his announcement of a strong US response the day before. At the same time, he added that such a topic was not raised at the Russian-American consultations on January 10, however, he expressed hope for diplomatic agreements between the Russian Federation and the United States, which would increase stability in Europe.
Negotiations on security guarantees took place in three stages. On January 10, a meeting of the Russian and US delegations took place in Geneva. On January 12, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held in Brussels, and on January 13, consultations ended at the Vienna site of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
After the talks on January 10, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted that the conversation was “difficult, long, very professional, deep, specific.” He added that Moscow hopes for NATO’s ability to understand the danger of deadlock for dialogue on security assurances within the next two days and take a step towards Russian proposals.
The high-ranking diplomat also pointed out that the issue of non-expansion of NATO is key for the national security of the Russian Federation, and the settlement of this topic cannot be further postponed.
Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, after the meeting of the Russia-NATO Council on January 12, called it “a difficult but important discussion.” According to him, there are disagreements between Russia and the alliance, which “are not easy to overcome, but it was important to start a dialogue.”
Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Grushko, in turn, noted that “the task of “containing Russia” is set at the forefront of NATO policy and military development. According to him, “colossal resources are allocated for this, it is not hidden that this is the main purpose of the alliance, and this very fact has a destructive effect on attempts to build common European security on other principles.”
On January 13, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin as a whole is clear on the outcome of the talks between Russia and NATO on security guarantees. According to him, we will have to wait for the promised written statements of the opponents.
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia, the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance must renounce any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. Also, Russia and NATO must pledge not to create conditions that may be regarded by the other side as a threat.
