To the wave of looting of items such as jewelry, telephones, consoles or hams, for which as of this Thursday there were already 60 detainees, there are more people trying to take advantage of the pain of those affected by DANA. In towns near Valencia, such as Sueca, and also in the capital, there are already warnings about people who, posing as Red Cross volunteers, go to homes asking for cash for those affected by the storm.
«Important notice. There are individuals who, wearing red vests, are posing as Red Cross representatives and requesting cash donations in different homes. We want to inform you that this activity is a scam,” warns the Sueca City Council in a message on its ‘X’ account. The council asks that, if anyone detects suspicious situations, they contact the local police in the town.
As ABC has learned, this situation is also occurring in some neighborhoods in the city of Valencia. A neighbor from the Malilla neighborhood explains how two people came to her house claiming to be Red Cross volunteers. They wore the organization’s vests. However, this woman did not fall for the scam and called the Red Cross to ask, where they assured her that at this time they have not launched any campaign that consists of going door to door asking for money.
As reported by the Red Cross in its ‘X’ account, the organization has currently launched several ways to raise funds to help the victims. None of them talk about in-person campaigns, but rather about donations through the website, SMS, telephone or Bizum.
Thousands of people have been affected by the #Dana. We work 24 hours a day to offer them safe accommodation and cover their basic needs. It’s time to help. If you can, collaborate!
