The residents of the San José neighborhood stayed with the fair set up and everything prepared for the patron saint festivities when on March 14, 2020, the whole of Spain began confinement due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2,000 euros raised in the small shop in the neighborhood for the celebration of the festivities were deposited in the solidarity account set up at the time by the City Council for the purchase of medical supplies. The board of directors of the association decided it unanimously, its coordinator, José Miguel Casanova, reminds LA TRUTH because “it was what had to be done.”

After two years without parties, the neighbors have begun preparations “with great enthusiasm and desire,” says Casanova. One of the main elements is the falla, which is made by the neighbors themselves with recycled materials. They have recovered the one from 2020, to which they are making only a few tweaks, because “the main issue, which is the degradation of the Mar Menor, unfortunately is still current.” It will not include any element that refers to the pandemic, “because we want to turn the page”, but it will be crowned by a lighthouse that symbolizes “that we see the light to get out of this situation”.

The days of celebration have been reduced from the usual 11 to just five and the “plantá” de la falla, which will mark the start of the festivities, will be on the 16th. The neighbors have scheduled fewer activities and there will be nine attractions in the park, five less than a normal year, to avoid crowds and “adapt to the situation.”
