The City Council enables a survey on its website so that citizens can suggest the destination of the industrial building
The City Council of Alhama de Murcia wants to value the old warehouse of the Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla (MCT), owned by the municipality and located next to the current logistics warehouse of the municipal brigade and the disused Renfe commuter rail station. The building of the old Commonwealth, built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, is protected by municipal planning as it is one of the few that remain standing of what is known as industrial architecture.
In the past, before belonging to the Taibilla entity, it was used as a transit warehouse for local companies that exported footwear and fruit, while importing products from overseas, as the businessman Lorenzo Rubio did from his possessions in Cuba at the beginning of the last century.
The Councilor for Town Planning, Antonio José Caja, points out that it is about regenerating an area of Alhama –where the warehouse is located–, which has been paralyzed for a long time. “To make decisions about this building, from the City Council we have started a process in which we request the collaboration of neighbors giving their opinion to complete the diagnosis,” he asserted. In order to be able to comment on this issue, the Consistory has enabled a section on the City Council’s website.
More changes in the area
Caja assures that his team is working on the recovery of the entire area, where there are a series of abandoned buildings. Some of them belong to Adif and the City Council has already requested their transfer to the Railway Infrastructure Administrator.
Urban planning is also studying the value of action units such as the old ceramics, located in the same area, as well as the opening of the old Camino Viejo de Cartagena. “We are also negotiating with the company ElPozo Alimentación, to reach an agreement and carry out a project where green and industrial areas can be set up on their La Algodonera farm,” says Caja.
From the City Council they are working on the possible arrival of European funds ‘Next Generation’ for this initiative, according to the councilor.
