Patients denounce “the delay in the incorporation of innovative medicines”
The Region of Murcia commemorated this Wednesday the World Day to Fight Breast Cancer with events in numerous locations. In Murcia, the Association to Help Women with Cancer (Amiga) read a manifesto that once called for “a public, universal, free, quality, equitable and efficient National Health System.” The patients expressed their concern about “the delay in the incorporation of innovative medicines to the portfolio of services”.
“We do not fully understand the reasons why access to these medicines is delayed, in which we place expectations to face the disease or improve our quality of life. The problem of access to innovative medicines in Spain requires an urgent solution”, warned in the manifesto of the Spanish Federation of Breast Cancer (Fecma), in which Amiga Murcia is a member.
“Delays cause alarm in public opinion and worry patients and we are concerned that this will negatively affect the credibility of our public health system. For this reason, we demand from the responsible administrations a greater work of pedagogy, to avoid alarms or unfounded sensations, “underlines Fecma. These problems especially affect patients with metastatic breast cancer.
the truthThe associations are committed to more research to improve survival in metastatic disease
The Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, and the Mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, attended the reading of the manifesto. The City Council has collaborated with Amiga in the development of different activities. One more year, this Wednesday a new edition of ‘Weaving for life’ was held in the Plaza de Santo Domingo.
For its part, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) held its main event on Avenida de la Libertad. This year, the AECC stressed the need for further research to improve the prognosis of metastatic breast cancer, whose survival rate is 25%, compared to 85% for all breast cancers.
In Cartagena
In Cartagena, the Spanish Association Against Cancer carried out a solidarity route through the streets of the city. The mayor, Noelia Arroyo, together with the deputy mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, showed their support for the patients and their families. “Much more resources must be promoted and allocated for research and that we have the appropriate services in each health area so that the new cases that are detected receive treatment without waiting lists and in the best possible conditions,” Arroyo said.
Institutions and universities also joined this commemoration. The UCAM reported the publication of a ‘Manual for the assessment of work capacity/incapacity due to breast cancer’, prepared by the International Chair of Evaluative and Expert Medicine. Breast cancer causes long periods of temporary work incapacity, which in 24% are permanent to some degree, the study indicates.
