Infinity Ward ventures with a new perspective for its shooter, used to the first person.
This weekend, gamers on PC, PlayStation and Xbox got a chance to find out why Activision considers Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to be the most ambitious video game in the franchise. We have talked about many of these benefits in a recent special in 3DJuegos, but we also want to echo Infinity Ward’s explanation about a surprise addition.
We talk about third person gameplay, a perspective very present in shooters, but more unusual to see in the Call of Duty saga. With it, the user will have a broader approach to his environment, although sacrificing depth of field in front of him, in games that will be in a list apart from those configured in first person. Now, why have you worked on this inclusion? Geoff Smithmultiplayer design director, explains it to us in a recent talk.
As a developer, we always like to test things Geoff Smith“As a developer, we always like to test things (…) when you get into a third person game, the experience is usually easier to approach. You are more aware of the situationif you’re covered you can look up,” says the creator. “We wanted to see if this could work in Moden Warfare despite being focused on FPS gameplay.” Although it was only available on Hardpoint in the beta, Smith says they will look to do what same with other modes.”We’ve done a lot of work on this aspect and it gives us an additional tool to shake up the post-launch experience and keep it fresh.”
First and third person, separate
Of course, do not expect a mode in the short term where there are players enjoying the same game in first and third person. Smith acknowledges that they did tests during production, but at the moment it is something that is not in the team’s plans.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be available in stores for PC (Steam and Battle.Net), PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on November 10. If you want to go deeper, you can take a look at the impressions with Modern Warfare 2 by Abelardo González in which he delved into this third-person mode.
