The Royal Spanish Academy, within the framework of the XVII Congress of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (Asale) in Quito (Ecuador) will present this Tuesday the second edition of the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts (DPD), as well as the Chronicle project (CLE ) and the revised and expanded edition of the New Grammar of the Spanish Language (NGLE).
The day will begin with an internal plenary session in which issues related to Asale and the digital challenge will be addressed and reports on various topics will be presented. The academic from the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) Asunción Gómez-Pérez will offer the report corresponding to the project ‘Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence’ (LEIA), while the RAE academic Guillermo Rojo will also do the same with the Corpus of 21st Century Spanish (Corpes) and the Corpus Asale, and the secretary of the Mexican Academy of Language (AML), Adolfo Castañón —on behalf of the deputy director of the AML, Concepción Company—, with that relating to the Diachronic and Diatopic Corpus of American Spanish (Cordiam). In this session, RAE academic Juan Luis Cebrián will talk about the media and the challenge of digital technology. Likewise, copyright and technology will also be reflected on in a speech on behalf of the deputy director of the RAE Carme Riera.
Next, the keynote lecture ‘Artificial intelligence and the Spanish language: challenges and opportunities’ will take place, given by Asunción Gómez-Pérez in a public session.
Starting at noon, the conference will focus on various pan-Hispanic academic works. Thus, the presentation of the second revised and expanded edition of the ‘New grammar of the Spanish language (NGLE), which will be led by Ignacio Bosque, director of the work and academic of the RAE, and Cristina Sánchez, coordinator of the edition; and the ‘Chronicle of the Spanish language 2023-2024’ and the ‘Chronicle project’ (CLE), led by its director, the president of the Asale and director of the RAE, Santiago Muñoz Machado.
Likewise, seven simultaneous commissions will be developed, all of them public, in which linguistic, literary and cultural issues, and other topics related to the teaching and progression of Spanish, and corpora, digital resources and artificial intelligence will be discussed. These sessions will feature the participation of a large group of academics and experts.
The day will continue with a new round of presentations of pan-Hispanic academic works. The RAE academic and director of the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts (DPD) Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez will be in charge of presenting the second expanded and updated edition of this work, accompanied by Susana Cordero de Espinosadirector of the Ecuadorian Academy of Language (AEL). The Academic Dictionary of Ecuadorianisms (DAE) will also be announced in a session led by the director of the AEL.
Next, there will be the presentation of the commemorative edition of the RAE and the Asale Alternate Currents. ‘Anthology of verse and prose’, by Octavio Paz, with Adolfo Castañón, coordinator of the edition and secretary of the Mexican Academy of Language.
Two works from the host academy will also be presented. They will be the edition of the AEL of Pórtico. ‘Anthology of speeches from the Ecuadorian Academy of Language. 1884-1935’, which will feature the intervention of the Ecuadorian academic Gonzalo Ortiz Crespo, and this academy’s edition of the work César Dávila Andrade: ‘Anthology and Interpretation’, with the participation of the academic Raúl Vallejo, who is also an academic.
To end the day, the Church of the Company of Jesus will be the scene of a tribute concert to the Asale offered by the Andean Instruments Orchestra.
The Association of Spanish Language Academies, founded in Mexico in 1951, has previously organized sixteen regular conferences, scheduled to be held every four years. The last of them, the XVI, took place in Seville from November 4 to 8, 2019, under the auspices of the Royal Spanish Academy. La Asale has also held four extraordinary and three regional congresses.
At the XVII Asale Congress, delegates from the twenty-three academies from around the world will meet, from November 11 to 13 in Quito (Ecuador), who share the responsibility of maintaining unity and the good use of Spanish, a common heritage. of almost 600 million people.
