Queen Margrethe II of Denmark appeared today, Monday, in her last public audience before abdicating the throne to her son next Sunday.
During her last meeting as Queen, Margaret II received 80 people at Christiansborg Palace, where they expressed their thanks and appreciation to her.
The Queen, who is 83 years old, no longer has any official engagements until next Sunday, when her son, Crown Prince Frederick (55 years old), ascends the throne to become King Frederick X.
In her speech on the occasion of the New Year, Queen Margaret II surprised her citizens when she announced that she would abdicate the throne after 52 years of sitting on it.
She attributed the reason, mainly, to undergoing back surgery last year. She noted that the surgery prompted her to think about her future as queen.
During the recovery period, the Queen canceled many appointments, or her son, Crown Prince Frederick, and his wife, Princess Mary (51 years old), also canceled them.
Her eldest son already attends appointments that the Queen used to attend herself. Prince Christian (18 years old), the eldest son of Prince Frederick, was also recently officially authorized to represent the Queen.
