The Valencia Prosecutor’s Office has opened proceedings for a possible hate crime committed by Cecilia Herrero, Vox councilor in the Valencia City Council, who governs the PP in coalition with the extreme right party, as sources from the public ministry have confirmed to this newspaper. . The investigation has been initiated following a complaint from the Compromís municipal group motivated by a message that the mayor of Entrepreneurship and Agriculture sent last April from her X account (former Twitter).
In the message, Herrero told the former deputy in the Madrid Assembly of Podemos, Serigne Mbayé, of Senegalese origin, to return to his country. This leader of the purple formation had issued on the same social network the next comment, in the form of a rhetorical question, regarding some videos by Daniel Esteve, leader of Desokupa: “Doesn’t it seem like something is missing or does it just seem that way to me?” To which Herrero responded, among others: “Yes. “You need to go back to your country.” The councilor now has restricted access to her has 11,000 followers which opened in 2020 and which she herself places in the “fachosphere”.
Compromís sent the capture of Herrero’s comment to the prosecutor’s office for being “clearly xenophobic, racist and offensive,” in the words of councilor Lucia Beamud. The coalition’s complaint was expanded with other messages of a similar nature, issued by Herrero before being appointed to municipal office, such as the following: “We are black. We can now loot Louis Vuitton and Apple and make them kneel and kiss our feet”, “So much reconquest to end up paying for the invasion of the Moors” or “The Moor is invading us while he rearms himself.” Invasion consented to and sponsored by the traitor government.” Now, the prosecutor’s office specialized in Hate Crimes, led by Susana Gisbert, will analyze the evidence to determine whether there may be criminal liability in the messages sent by the councilor. It has an initial period of six months for its investigations before making a determination.
The socialist municipal group, represented by councilor Borja Sanjuán, asked for Herrero’s resignation, like Compromís, and presented a motion of disapproval that was rejected. The mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá, of the PP, avoided referring directly to the comments of the councilor of her Government team and responded to the requests for dismissal by emphasizing that the important thing is the motion approved by the council to reject “everything racist comment, any discrimination or any content that is not appropriate.”
The second deputy mayor and spokesman for Vox in the City Council, Juan Manuel Badenas, came out in defense of his partner, denied that his comments had been racist and argued that Mbayé had entered Spain illegally and had set up a union of manteros.
