Since 2020, companies such as Telmex, Megacable, Izzi and Totalplay have taken on the task of changing the Internet by fiber optics, something that has improved from each company, but this has also caused an increase in the prices offered by each company. Now, it was recently confirmed that The Mexican government has increased the import tax on fiber opticswhich could cause an increase in the internet in the country.
Specific, The Ministry of Economy has made the decision to increase import tariffs for fiber optics by 35%. Although at the moment there is no official statement, this could mean that Megacable, Izzi and Totalplay increase the price of their services. Installing fiber optics is anything but cheap, and these three companies have chosen to increase the price of their internet to avoid losses. Telmex is the only one that has done this since 2020. In this regard, this is what Brian Rodríguez, analyst at Monex Grupo Financiero, commented:
“Inflationary pressures persist in the country and these types of decisions have an impact on the costs and profitability of companies. One of the ways operators can solve it is through rates or reduction of other costs within the companies.”
Multiple users, such as Jorge Moreno Loza, a lawyer specialized in telecommunications and leader of the Expanzione law firm, have criticized the government’s decision to increase the tax on fiber optics, which would have negative results for internet users in Mexico. This is what he commented:
“It is incredible that the Government is not enough for the cost of the radio spectrum, now also for the elements of passive infrastructure. “I think the government is making a mistake and this will have consequences for the state of connectivity and the objective of closing the digital divide.”
According to the International Telecommunications Union, the entity in charge of regulating the industry internationally, it has indicated that connectivity charges should not exceed 2% of users’ monthly income. However, In Mexico we see 2.5% for users with higher incomes, and up to 10% for those with lower purchasing power.
Although for the moment There is no official information from Telmex, Megacable, Izzi and Totalplay regarding an increase in the price of internet, this is a possibility that should not be ruled out. On related topics, this is the best internet for streaming in Mexico. Likewise, will Telmex increase the price of its internet?
Author’s Note:
All internets in Mexico have a problem. As a Telmex user, perhaps I don’t pay as much as those with Megacable, Izzi and Totalplay, but I do suffer more from connectivity problems and constant failures that are a problem.
