Congress suspends the control session to avoid political scuffle, but maintains the debate and vote on the royal decree-law that modifies the public radio and television law
At least 51 dead in Valencia in the worst DANA of the century
The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, announced this Wednesday that his deputies will be absent from the Plenary Session of Congress that will debate and vote on the royal decree-law to reform RTVE and that will allow the Government and its partners to control the majority of the Council of the public entity. “I ask the Government to convene an extraordinary Council of Ministers and declare national mourning. And that the Plenary Session not be held,” he said in a statement to the media in which he asked to suspend all political activity due to DANA, which has caused dozens of deaths in the Valencian Community. “We are not going to participate,” he concluded, to attack the Executive for the “hypocrisy of suspending the ordinary plenary session and, without scruples, calling an extraordinary plenary session for the control of RTVE.”
This Wednesday’s parliamentary session began at nine with the uncertainty of how long it would last due to information about the impact that the storms have had in areas of the east and southeast of Spain. After a couple of questions from the opposition to the Government, the parliamentary spokespersons have asked to suspend control of the Executive and debate the convenience of continuing or not with the work.
The final decision has been intermediate: suspend control of the Government, which usually results in a harsh dialectical confrontation with the opposition. The groups have mostly opted not to continue with the questions and interpellations, as well as postpone the votes on pending non-legislative initiatives.
But the majority of the groups have wanted to maintain the full validation of the RTVE royal decree-law, which has caused the PP to complain, which Feijóo later personalized in a statement without questions from journalists. “I do not understand the selective respect for the victims,” he said, describing the “attitude” of the parliamentary majority as “despicable.” “They are not aware of the seriousness of the decision they have made,” he said.
“Every political issue can wait,” he stated, and cited that the Senate has chosen to completely suspend its activity for today.
Feijóo has also regretted that the Government has not given him any information about the situation in the areas affected by DANA. “All the information I have has been provided to me by the presidents of the autonomous communities. Neither my group nor I have had any information transferred by the Government of Spain,” he assured.
The leader of the PP has announced his intention to travel precisely to the affected areas.
