While society asks politicians to put aside their struggles and work side by side to help the thousands of people affected by DANA, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, chooses to prepare for the end of this month of November a Intermunicipal summit in which to show unity and management internally in the face of the “real problems of the citizens”, as they have explained to Europa Press party sources.
It is true that the date was scheduled before the tragedy that has devastated a good part of Spain, but the choice is not coincidental: in those same days the Federal Congress of the PSOE is scheduled to be held in Seville, which will once again elect Pedro Sánchez as general secretary. The counterprogramming of the event by the PP It will also occur in the middle of the debate over the management of this storm, the largest natural disaster in the history of Spain.
And it does so, furthermore, while criticism rains down both towards the Government of Spain and towards that of the Valencian Community, governed by the ‘popular’ Carlos Mazón, whom Feijóo has tried to support his management of the crisis despite the obvious failures of communication to the citizens, who received the emergency notices when the floods were already devastating the cities.
CARROÑARISM
In the coming weeks the administrations will have to continue coordinating to face the work recovery and reconstruction. For now, the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has announced five immediate response groups before DANA and has asked to have ministers to manage them.
In front of message of unity launched by both the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and Mazónwho publicly thanked the collaboration between institutions, Feijóo has chosen at all times to put the responsibilities on the Sánchez Government, to which PP sources accuse of “political scavenging” despite the fact that the leader of the Executive has constantly called for unity and has indicated that “there will be time to look back and clarify responsibilities.” In addition, he has announced that on Tuesday he will approve the declaration that the DANA areas are seriously affected.
In this sense, Sánchez has ordered the deployment of another 5,000 soldiers and has made all the resources he needs available to Mazón. However, given the Spanish political system, it is necessary for the Valencian president to ask for them, something that for Feijóo is not admissible, defending that the State should act “as the Generalitat Valenciana and the rest of the Autonomous Communities and municipalities do with admirable resistance.” . Action that said Generalitat, governed by the PP, did not carry out in the face of repeated alerts from the Aemet.
REPLICA TO THE PSOE
The date chosen for this Intermunicipal of the PP coincides with that of the federal congress that the PSOE will hold in Seville between November 29 and December 1, in which Pedro Sánchez will stand for re-election as general secretary of the party. Furthermore, this act of mayors and councilors of the PP will have on the table some of the matters that will be part of the agenda of the Conference of Presidentsa meeting that the Government wants to convene in Cantabria in December, although at the moment there is no set date.
The problem of access to housing, immigration, health and financing appears on the agenda of this Conference of Presidents, as agreed this week by the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the advisors of the CCAA in the preparatory meeting held in Madrid.
SECTORAL ACTS
The Popular Party has decided that this meeting of municipal officials will take place in Castilla y León, a community governed by the PP with Alfonso Fernández Mañueco at the head (and who previously governed with the far-right Vox before the breakup) and who in recent months has focused on problems such as depopulation.
The previous days, between November 25 and 29, the PP plans to host the “week of municipalism” with “sectoral events” in different provinces of Castilla y León on issues that affect municipal management and the work carried out by mayors , as sources from the training have informed Europa Press.
The last Intermunicipal of the PP took place in Valencia in February 2023 and Feijóo brought together the former presidents of the Government, José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy, in the same photo. That conclave served to present many of the municipal candidates that the party presented for the May 28 elections.
