About fifty people supported the Cartagena Platform against Pollution this Thursday morning in their protest in front of City Hall over the delay in the decontamination of industrial lands. Coinciding with the celebration of the monthly plenary session, the platform demanded that the Autonomous Community now authorize the Ercros project for the decontamination of the soils of the old Potash and Derivatives factory, in El Hondón.
«The current situation is one of paralysis on the part of the administrations. We are surprised that the Community is now requesting a new technical report from Ercros, when its remediation project was already validated by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN). We have been like this for twenty-four years and we are very concerned because in the end we see that the decontamination project will have to be paid for by all the people of Cartagena, while our health is compromised,” said the platform's spokesperson, Pedro Gálvez.
The MC Municipal Group brought to the plenary session this Thursday at the Town Hall an institutional declaration, at the request of the platform, in which they urge the owners of the land, including the Cartagena City Council, to act now. «The neighbors ask that there be no more delays after two decades of waiting. We demand that the Community not wait to verify whether the technical report that it has now requested from Ercros, and that it should have requested a long time ago, act in parallel and not let the matter go to court,” said the group's spokesperson. municipal, Jesús Giménez Gallo.
For his part, the spokesperson for the local government, Nacho Jáudenes, clarified that they have presented an alternative institutional declaration to “collect the unanimous feelings of everyone.” “We are willing to agree to it.”
«The Law and the decrees of the Autonomous Community are clear: whoever pollutes, pays. And in this case, it is the company Ercros. In fact, in the institutional statement promoted by MC and the platform the company is not mentioned, which is very suspicious. The alternative institutional declaration that we have presented is that the Autonomous Community, through the General Directorate of the Environment, is in charge of monitoring compliance with the company's obligations and if it does not do so, it is the Community that executes them accordingly. subsidiary way We do not agree that the people of Cartagena pay for pollution caused by the multinational Ercros, which is now washing its hands of it,” said Jáudenes.
Finally, the socialist spokesperson, Manuel Torres, who also went down to speak with the neighbors, supported the platform's position. «We want it to be a park, a green area, so that we do not continue speculating about the solution, but rather apply it now. A comprehensive decontamination plan must be developed for the health of citizens and for the enjoyment of an area after so many years of depletion. “Those who decontaminated in Potasas, Zinsa and Peñarroya are leaving without a hitch and we citizens are left with the rot.”
The platform demands that the Ministry of the Environment also seal the Zinsa ponds and the restoration of the soils of this landfill; and the remediation of the Peñarroya plots in Santa Lucía and the rest of the properties contaminated by heavy metals throughout the city. On the other hand, the platform has announced that it is studying the presentation of a complaint against different officials of the City Council and the Community for their “inaction.” “Enough laughing at the neighbors!” cried the platform's spokesperson, Fulgencio Sánchez.
