The Phantom of the Opera ends on Broadway after 35 years

After 35 years, the musical The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in New York comes to an end. The last performances will be in February 2023, American media report. It is the longest running show on Broadway.

Reason for ending the musical would be the corona crisis. Since the theaters reopened, ‘The Phantom’ has suffered major losses. According to media, it would be about 1 million euros per month.

The first production of The Phantom of the Opera opened in London in 1986 and since then the show has been seen by more than 145 million people in 183 cities and performed in more than 70,000 performances in 17 languages. The musical was first shown on Broadway on January 26, 1988. On Broadway alone, the Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has had more than 13,500 performances before 19 million people at The Majestic Theater.

Chicago is the second longest-running production in New York, with over 10,000 performances. This musical has been on Broadway since 1996 and is still running. The Lion King, from 1997, follows in third place.

Broadway took a major hit during the pandemic, with all theaters closed for more than 18 months. Some of the most popular shows – “Hamilton”, “The Lion King” and “Wicked” – have recovered well, but others are still struggling.
