The European Parliament yesterday approved a resolution that urges the European Union to adopt strategic measures to guarantee the competitiveness of energy intensive industries during its transition to cleaner production processes. The initiative focuses on electrification, the development of neutral carbon technologies and the reduction of the energy price gap with international competitors.
The text, approved by the Industry Commission, highlights the key role of sectors such as steel, cement, glass, chemicals and paper in the economy and its decarbonization efforts. However, MEPs warn that these sectors face high costs and emissions derived from their productive processes, which complicates their ecological transition.
The Eurodiputados identify several obstacles that limit competitiveness, including high energy prices compared to other markets, volatility of fossil fuels and an incomplete energy union. In addition, they consider that the regulatory burden and complexity of financing mechanisms particularly affect small and medium enterprises. In this sense, they warn about the challenges of the emission trade system, which faces imbalances due to market changes and the unequal use of their income.
To address these problems, the resolution advocates expediting the granting of permits for clean energy projects and for applying the design regulations of the EU electricity market, with special emphasis on long -term contracts (PPAS) and contracts for bidirectional differences (CFDs).
Likewise, it is proposed to improve the integration of the energy system and promote investment in network infrastructure. Another key point of resolution is the need to address global unfair competition. For this, the effective implementation of the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) and the creation of reference markets for sustainable European products are requested.
