Pocket Pair is the famous team of the even more famous Palworld. The survival game in which we can capture, grow (and slaughter) cute colorful creatures was the great success of early 2024, when it sold over 15 million copies on PC and Xbox and gathered even more players thanks to Game Pass. This has certainly allowed the Pocket Pair team to earn huge amounts of money. Shortly before, however, the situation was very different and the company had to rent part of its offices as a storage warehouse.
In a recent tweet, Mizobe explained that when Pocket Pair was founded, about 80% of the team based in Ookayama who worked on the studio’s debut roguelike card game, Overdungeon, was made up of students from his university. “None of us had much experience in the industry, but we managed to make a game and release it on Steam,” Mizobe continued, “so I encourage everyone to keep creating.”
Mizobe then said that after graduation he “rented part of Ookayama’s office” to a friend who then “used it as a deposit for poker chips”. The CEO’s story serves to underline how the situation of a small company can change suddenly and confirms that, even after the great success, he remembers well from where he arrived.
Pocket Pair, not just Palworld
Pocket Pair is known for Palworldthe “Pokémon with guns,” which has certainly allowed him to make a lot of money, have worldwide attention, and likely secure a future in video game development, but this isn’t his only game in development.
Palworld is in early access and will be continuously updated, but in the meantime Pocket Pair is also creating Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse. The game attracted attention for its aesthetic, which is reminiscent of Hollow Knight, but is actually more similar to Dead Cells with some management elements. We have offered you our tried and tested version of Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse.
