Over 1 million refugees have arrived in Poland since the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine. This was announced on Sunday, March 6, by the border guard of the republic.
“Today at 20:00 (22:00 Moscow time), the number of people who fled from Ukraine to Poland exceeded one million,” the Polish border service said on Twitter.
On the eve of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that more than 1.2 million refugees have arrived in the territory of the European Union since the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine.
The President also expressed gratitude to the front-line countries hosting evacuated citizens of Ukraine, including Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, “for their outstanding solidarity.”
Earlier, on March 5, it was reported that the Czech government plans on Monday to discuss a bill introduced by the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of the Republic, Marian Jurechka, on paying 5,000 crowns (about €200) to refugees from Ukraine as a monthly financial support.
It was also noted that the Czech Cabinet will support its citizens who provide refugees with housing. They will receive 1,000 crowns (about €40) for five months.
Earlier, on March 4, a state of emergency was introduced in the Czech Republic due to the large number of refugees arriving from Ukraine. It was reported that about 30,000 refugees from Ukraine had already arrived in the country.
On the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the launch of a special temporary accommodation program for Ukrainian citizens on his territory. He also noted that there is already a sponsorship program for the reunification of Ukrainian refugees with relatives living in Canada.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced his readiness to accept refugees at the end of February. The intention to support the refugees was expressed by the authorities of Great Britain and the United States.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. After that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.
On February 21, Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), as well as treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics. The documents were ratified the next day.
The situation escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
Since 2014, Kyiv has been conducting an operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the new government in Ukraine.
