Current figures on deportations to Germany are available. Left-wing politicians speak of “deportation madness”. A Balkan country is in first place.
Osnabrück – Is this already an effect of the planned “repatriation offensive”? In the autumn, Chancellor Olaf Scholz had Mirrorinterview: “We must finally deport on a large scale those who have no right to stay in Germany.” The New Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ) now reports on current figures on deportations in this country.
Accordingly, the number of deportations increased by more than a third in the first quarter of 2024. A total of 4,791 people without residence status had been deported by the end of March, they said NOZ in its May 23 issue. The newspaper is based on a response from the federal government to a request from Left.
Deportations from Germany: deportations are most often carried out to these countries
Compared to the same period last year, this represents an increase of around 34 percent. North Macedonia was in first place when it came to taking back nationals between January and March. Most of the deportees (483) came from the small Balkan state. Other countries loudly NOZ:
- Türkiye (449 returns)
- Georgia (416)
- Afghanistan (354)
- Serbia (312)
“NOZ”: More than 7,000 returns failed in the first quarter
However, deportations often do not take place. In the first quarter of the current year, 7,048 planned returns failed. According to the NOZ could no longer be found or flights were cancelled. Medical reasons played a much rarer role.
The Left Party politician Clara Bünger, who made the request according to the NOZ accused the federal government of “deportation mania”. “The moral inhibitions seem to be disappearing on the authorities’ side,” she told the newspaper. In addition, the number of deportations is increasing, although there are fewer and fewer people required to leave the country.
“NOZ”: There could be a few thousand more deportations in 2024
The NOZ further reported that the traffic light coalition originally expected 600 additional deportations per year. Whether the current figures are an effect of the tougher asylum rules is not clear from the federal government’s response. If the trend in deportations continues – the NOZ – in the end, there would be several thousand more people deported from Germany this year. (frs with AFP)
