Amazon’s delivery cars and vans will be replaced by electric carts and micro vehicles in the center of Madrid. This Tuesday, the company presented a new micromobility center in Madrid with a new “zero emissions” package delivery system: about carts driven by delivery people to deliver packages on foot and cargo bicycles or electric motorcycles that seek to “reduce carbon emissions in deliveries, alleviate traffic congestion and reduce noise in urban centers”, as reported in the presentation.
These micromobility centers are small delivery stations that are usually located in the center of cities with high population density and allow delivery people to walk or travel with electric motorcycles or bicycles. to reach customers more efficiently and without emitting polluting gases. Specifically, the new Madrid station is located in the hub Canalejas 360 mobility system to provide service to this area of the center of the capital.
The delegate of Urban Planning, Mobility and Environment, Borja Carabante, has highlighted the importance of these public-private collaboration models. “Since 2017 The number of packages sent in Madrid has doubled And, therefore, we must respond to this new logistics with an urban merchandise distribution strategy. In this case, with this alone 19 vans that were circulating in the center of Madrid have been removed, improving congestion, pollution, and favoring sustainable mobility,” explained the delegate.
A “decarbonized” center
With this, Amazon seeks to “decarbonize its European transportation network,” as company sources explain. Currently, most Amazon packages in Madrid, whose destination is the city center, are delivered using alternative means of transport that emit less emissions than those of traditional vans. One of the micromobility collaborators that Amazon works with is Koiki, specialized in making deliveries on foot with the curious “new carts”, but also by bicycle and motorcycles.
“In the current context, it is almost impossible to conceive a delivery model that does not focus on sustainability. If we want to live in cities, we must relieve public space and reduce emissions. Both customers and companies are responsible for foster a positive impact in our communities“explained Nerea Ortiz García, head of operations at Koiki.
