Olaf Scholz (SPD) is the new Federal Chancellor: What changes are in store for Germany? Scholz gives an insight in the ZDF interview.
Mainz – “I have always thought it possible that the SPD would lead the government of this country,” said Olaf Scholz (SPD) on the day of his election as the new Federal Chancellor in the ZDF program “What now, Mr. Scholz?”.
“A clear course, pursuit of goals, everything has to be done quickly,” says Scholz. He would like the different parties to make each other strong. “An era begins that will mark the twenties,” says Scholz when asked to put the time of his taking office a little bit historical. The upcoming tasks are, for example, the expansion of industrialization with renewable energies, digitization, as well as stable pensions and a minimum wage. The latter two could also ensure respect and cohesion in society. Climate change and technological progress are not contradictions. You are at a turning point here when you reduce the consumption of resources.
Olaf Scholz on ZDF: How can Scholz (SPD) hold the Greens and the FDP together?
“It was already relatively harmonious in the negotiations, including at points of friction,” says Scholz, referring to the relationship with the Greens and the FDP. He could also advance that further. “It is not that there are two arguing, and then the SPD ensures that there is a consensus.” The matter and trust are always the focus.
As far as Europe is concerned, he is confident that no new debt will have to be borrowed, but that the instruments of the reconstruction fund can first be exhausted, said Scholz. They have carried through the crisis and are also future-proof. Scholz’s first trip is to Paris. Here, too, he wants to promote the move to ensure sufficient electricity through renewable energies. But France cannot be stopped when it comes to nuclear power.
Olaf Scholz (SPD) and foreign policy: How will the relationship with China and Russia be?
“In 30 years there will be 10 billion people on the planet. And then there will not only be the USA or Russia, but also China, Indonesia, Malaysia, ”says Scholz, listing other countries. He advocates not making hasty decisions – as it would be an Olympic boycott in China by diplomats – but instead relying on sensible cooperation. “There has to be a togetherness in the world, even with governments that are completely different from ours.”
In relation to Russia, there is no question that there has been great progress. “The limits that we have today are not called into question; that is the basis of security,” says Scholz. When asked whether illegal invasions by Russia would result in a halt to the “Nord Stream 2” project, Scholz did not give a specific answer.
Olaf Scholz (SPD) on compulsory vaccinations and the cooperation with Angela Merkel (CDU)
Does the term of office begin with a broken word? “We have not come this far in convincing a sufficient number of citizens to vaccinate. And that’s why it’s only logical that a new boost should come in, ”replies Scholz. The new government was not too hesitant either, there was a large vaccination campaign and a new crisis team.
“Angela Merkel gave me congratulations on the way and the promise that we will continue to work together so trustingly,” says Scholz. “We will continue to exchange ideas about politics.”
Olaf Scholz in an interview with ZDF: What is the new Federal Chancellor planning?
The day for Olaf Scholz is already long at this point: after he was elected Chancellor in the Bundestag that morning, he was sworn in at Bellevue Palace – and took over the Federal Chancellery in the afternoon. Scholz made a smile by alluding to the similar political style.
