The Florida Keys were illuminated again by the Alligator Reef Light House, which was off for more than a decade. It is one of the six lighthouses in the coral reefs of this series of Floridian islands. Although it is not yet 100 percent restored, given the great cost required to do so, a plan has already been created to raise this amount.
First, in order to restore the light, a fundraiser was held among Islamorada residents, who own the Alligator Lighthouse, according to information from El Nuevo Herald. Solar-powered lights were installed on the 150-year-old structure.
Rob Dixon, executive director of Save Alligator Lighthouse, said he was happy to see the light of this iconic building in the Sunshine State: “And now our Statue of Liberty is illuminated again… We illuminated the Alligator Lighthouse so that the entire community could be focused, even at night.”
Where is Alligator Reef Light House located in Florida?
The lighthouse is anchored in the coral, about four kilometers from Indian Key. Its importance lies in the fact that, in ancient times, the six lighthouses in the area served as guides for sailors to navigate safely when leaving the Keys. In addition, it is a great tourist attraction that both locals and visitors can enjoy at night.
For now, Dixon estimated that the complete renovation of the structure will cost $6,000,000, so many donations are needed. US$500,000 has already been raised, including US$250,000 from the Tourism Development Council. “We have the support of a great community. There is no one in this community who does not want to help our project,” concluded the director, in statements to the aforementioned media.
