The water has reached the book deposits and around a hundred books have been damaged, all of them from the modern collection.
The heavy downpour that fell this Thursday in Madrid has once again caused significant leaks in the National Library of Spain (BNE), at the Recoletos headquarters. As ABC has learned, the water began to fall on Thursday morning on the 12th floor of the general warehouse, and as the hours passed, the water reached the 10th floor. According to Jesús Rodríguez, UGT spokesperson for the BNE, between fifty and one hundred pounds could have been damaged, all from the modern fund, “fortunately.”
«At 7 in the morning the water began to fall in the tank on the 12th floor. Then it rained more and at 9 it already seemed like a deluge. We do not have an exact figure, but between fifty and one hundred books will have been damaged. Now they are in the restoration laboratory, ventilating, drying,” adds Rodríguez. Other internal sources indicate that on the 11th floor there are important funds, especially Hispanic Americans.
«We had to empty the shelves as quickly as possible. “We entered with umbrellas and raincoats,” says Rodríguez.
