The mystery of Daouda Diane: the worker who was protesting for rights in Sicily has disappeared for two months
Where is Daouda Diane? From 2 July there are no traces of the worker residing in Acate, in the province of Ragusa. A few days ago he had started working illegally for the Sgv Calcestruzzi company where he had reported the dangerous working conditions of the plants to colleagues and friends. Lawyer Mirko La Martina denied that the company had benefited from Diane’s work, which he would only have asked to “sweep” the courtyard sporadically, but some evidence seems to say more. The first is a video showing the man operating with a jackhammer, the second the testimony of the roommate, according to which “a man came to pick up Daouda at seven in the morning and brought him back in the afternoon”, reports Fanpage. On the day of his disappearance, the company cameras were inactive.
Investigators have opened an investigation into the murder and concealment of a corpse. It is feared that the worker, who was the victim of an accident at work, has disappeared at the hands of his employers. It is difficult to believe the theory of the 38-year-old’s voluntary removal: twenty days later he would have had to leave for the Ivory Coast, to visit his wife and son whom he had not seen for five years.
The USB Ragusa union had organized a demonstration on 22 July, where over 500 workers participated, many of them migrants like Daouda. The union denounced the silence of politics: “not a regional councilor, not a representative of Sicilian politics took the floor on the disappearance of a worker. The suspicion comes naturally: maybe because he was ‘only’ a migrant? ”. Furthermore, Daouda benefited from a residence permit and worked as a cultural mediator since his arrival in Italy. He was committed to the rights of workers in Sicily, he had participated several times in USB demonstrations.
The prosecutor has not entered any name in the register of suspects, while several voices rise against the slowness in the search for the worker. “Dozens of trucks come out of that company a day, have they ever checked them? And in the quarries or in the nearby tanks have they ever looked? ” said a friend of the deceased. For more than a month the prosecutors have not advanced in searches, Ragusa news reports.
