A series of worrying reports have started to circulate online among owners of the Vision Pro, Apple's augmented reality headset currently only available in the States. Some users have shared surprisingly similar experiences of a crack appearing on the front glass of their headsets. The peculiarity of these reports lies in the fact that none of the owners seem to know how this could have happened. The problem was initially noticed by MacRumors, and since then, five separate users of the r/VisionPro subreddit have posted about it. The site too Engadget reported that the same fate befell the headset sent by Apple for review. What makes the phenomenon even stranger is that all the photos uploaded by users show thin vertical cracks in the exact same area above the nose bridge. All affected Redditors say they didn't do anything that could obviously cause the cracks, such as dropping the device or storing it improperly. One user in particular claims to have cleaned the front glass, put on the soft cover, put everything back in the case, and discovered the crack the following morning.
There is speculation that it could be a heating issue when the Vision Pro is charged in the case or cover, while others suggest it could be a manufacturing flaw in the glass or simply a design flaw that puts too much strain on that specific area. It's also unclear whether the crack is just a cosmetic issue, as it appears to appear above a sensor but isn't obstructing any of the cameras. Nonetheless, repairing the Vision Pro turns out to be expensive. With Apple Care, which costs $500 for the Vision Pro, there is a $299 deductible for glass repairs. Without it, the cost is $799. One user wrote that he visited the Apple Store and was told that he would have to pay the deductible to have the crack repaired. To date, it is still unclear how widespread this problem is, as reports appear limited to Reddit.
