The new Speed Camera Decree came into force a few days ago, published by the government to prevent speed detection devices from being used as simple tools to make money and not to defend the safety of road users. TO Colle Santa Lucia the tourists who have stumbled upon what has in all respects been defined as the most profitable speed camera in the country in 2023 in relation to the inhabitants of the Municipality think that the function of that speed meter is the first, in reality, the mayor swore of the small village in the shadow of the Dolomites, the real reason for its presence is the second.
Record fines
Reading the numbers, in fact, a doubt might arise: inhabitants of Colle Santa Lucia 346, value of high fines 747,000 euros in 2023 alone, equal to 2,159 euros per resident. In the previous two years, the numbers were not much better: in 2022 the speed camera in question stopped at 623,000 euros, in 2021 however at 552,367 euros. And in most cases tourists were targeted: out of 4,596 reports, in fact, 3,132 were sent to foreign travelers and 1,464 to compatriots. In short, a massacre of fines: the value of the sanctions was 83 times higher than the Italian average, with over 1.9 million euros in three years.
The speed camera of nightmares
Coincidence of coincidences, the mayor of Colle Santa Lucia is called Paolo Frena. “Who believes that traveling to crazy speed even in the mountains it is a right to hate us because we are four village cats and so our speed camera seems like a trap set to finance our festivals – complains the mayor – In reality, other meters in cities yield much higher figures. The problem remains security: I invite those who insult me to come up here and check the social and environmental unsustainability of the situation“.
Fleximan is not scary
As Repubblica recalls, the one in Colle Santa Lucia was one of the first speed cameras to end up in the sights of a hero according to many, Fleximanto be precise in 2019. “Its demolition didn’t scare us and we put it back into operation – concluded Frena – Since 19 April, however, due to the outbreak of the non-approval case and the sentences of the judiciary, we have detected the exceeding of the 50 km/h limit, but we have suspended the notification of fines to avoid new appeals. A joke: the number of fireball drivers increases, they know that we are powerless and they take advantage of this to violate every limit. Now, together with the other mayors of the Dolomites, I have asked for a meeting with the prefect of Belluno: let him clarify what we can do to save the lives of our people”.
