JRecently there was another one of these discussions among friends about the question of whether Israel's reaction to the massacre on October 7th was “proportionate”. Everyone present shared the feeling that it was relatively comfortable to debate the proportionality criteria in a war in Frankfurt's Nordend.
One argument in the debate sounded more pragmatic-utilitarian and less humanitarian-moral. Such a massive strike by Israel, which costs the lives of tens of thousands of people in Gaza, would strengthen Hamas in the long term, which would use this as legitimation for future terrorist attacks against Israel. In this respect, moderation would not only be a requirement of the laws of war and international law, but also of prudence.
