Just 10 months after taking the baton of command, Ángela Gaona Cabrera presented her resignation yesterday in the Registry of the Consistory and, subsequently, released a statement written in the first person in which she summarized: «I say goodbye with deep sadness for breaking my commitment and “I won't finish the legislature, but I can't take it anymore.”
Today, Friday, the extraordinary plenary session will take place in which he will inform the corporation of his resignation and Pedro Javier Sánchez, councilor for Urban Planning and Infrastructure, Discipline and Industrial Services, will be appointed accidental mayor. In about 10 days, this 49-year-old dentist could be named mayor for the rest of the legislature with the simple majority of the PP (9 votes compared to 5 for Vox, 4 for the PSOE and 3 for the San Pedro Independent Group).
As arguments for his resignation, Gaona points out that “with me all limits have been exceeded, going beyond political and professional criticism, and taking it to my private life and my own image.”
The lawyer, 38 years old, six months pregnant, also justifies her decision because, as she explains in her statement, “now a life is growing inside me that I want to protect, along with the life of my family.” She shows her desire to “make the most of that time, which on too many occasions I have stolen from mine.”
He makes it clear in his message that “these recent times have not been pretty or easy.”
Gaona makes it clear in his message that “these recent times have not been pretty or easy”, which, despite the conflicts he has had during his short term, continues to surprise those around the City Council. The tensions with the municipal police, which he has maintained since 2021 due to the non-payment of overtime worked by the agents, led to protests in plenary sessions and the refusal of a part of the staff to perform extraordinary services.
“The debt of 80,000 euros with the Police and the promises that were never carried out” undermined the relationship with the unions, according to the Csif representative, Carlos Parra. He assures that “the possibility of dialogue was nil, because she was sitting on tax terms,” although he rules out that the disagreements with some agents have precipitated the councilor's resignation.
What devastating criticism was Gaona referring to was the question that circulated yesterday in WhatsApp groups and in circles close to the City Council. Local forums on social networks have not been kind to the new candidate, who lost the absolute majority revalidated by her predecessor, Visitación Martínez, during three successive terms.
The weight loss in the plenary hall has not made it easy for him to manage. In fact, he had not yet reached agreements to approve this year's Budget, although these obstacles are not seen by the opposition as a cause of the unexpected resignation.
Neither the mayor nor any of the councilors that LA VERDAD called yesterday answered to complete the information.
“It had many fronts”
For the PSOE spokesperson, José Lorenzo Martínez, “the management has been chaotic, but I did not expect the resignation.” He assures that he is unaware of “those personal attacks that she talks about, because I try to avoid social networks, but I know that she does give them a lot of importance.” He believes that “she had many fronts open, with the Police, with the judicialized garbage contract and with the hiring of the summer concerts.” He criticizes “the hiring of Isabel Pantoja for 176,000 euros, while she lowers scholarships and subsidies.”
Dear @agaonacabrera:
You have been a great mayor. You are a good friend. I am convinced that you will always remain dedicated to San Pedro del Pinatar.
Indeed, not everything goes and you know that you have my support. There are many of us who love you. Now it's time to dedicate yourself to yours pic.twitter.com/FiMn1gxAd3— Fernando López Miras (@LopezMirasF) April 4, 2024
The Sal de Música festival contracts also do not have the support of independents. “Only if all the tickets are sold can 60% of the box office be recovered, but if not, the singer takes 176,000 euros without VAT, and the cheapest ticket is 65 euros,” Pérez criticizes. Even so, the spokesperson does not believe that municipal pressures have intervened in the mayor's departure. “I suppose they will be personal reasons, because she has not chaired any of the tables, neither with the negotiation with the workers, who this week overturned her Personnel proposal, nor with the opposition,” says the independent spokesperson.
