The extra-urban roads they are confirmed as among the most dangerous for motorists and beyond. A real sentence that emerges from the PIN Flash 46 Report “Reducing road deaths on rural roads”, published yesterday by the European Transport Safety Council: at European level, half of all road victims, around 10,000 deaths in 2022occurred on non-motorway extra-urban roads.
The numbers of the massacre
The situation it's not much better in Italy: numbers in hand, in fact, in 2022 the greatest number of deaths, approximately 48.5% of the total road victims in 2022, concentrated precisely on this type of road, which has a higher mortality rate than the others road areas, with a figure of approximately 4.3 deaths per 100 accidents. Because extra-urban roads are more dangerous? According to the report, the reason is quickly explained: “They often lack central and lateral barriers, and are traveled by very different vehicles in terms of weight and speed.”
The four recommendations of the ETSC
To try to overcome all these problems and improve the above numbers, the ETSC itself has put pen to paper four recommendations: installation of lateral and central barriers, removal of obstacles along the roadside, construction of separate paths for cyclists and construction of sidewalks for pedestrians. Other notes that emerged from the report: in many cases the speed remains a major risk factor, accounting for approximately half of deaths cyclists occurs on extra-urban roads.
We need to intervene
“Country roads can be made safer with interventions that should not be expensive – commented Jenny Carson, co-author of the Report – Road safety checks, analysis and subsequent treatment of high-risk sites, definition and enforcement of adequate speed limits, creation of separate routes for cyclists and pedestrians, removal of roadside obstacles: these are some examples of what can be done and it must be done. With the growing focus on urban road safety, it is vitally important that political leaders do not forget the extra-urban roads, on which half of road deaths occur”.
