The most catastrophic predictions came true. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warned of heavy rains by DANA for Tuesday, with a red alert in several provinces, and the rainfall fell torrentially with tragic consequences, especially in the Valencian Community.
The following map shows the accumulated precipitation during the 24 hours of Tuesday, October 29. The points show the millimeters of water per square meter collected in each of the meteorological stations that Aemet has throughout Spain. The data is provisional.
Disasters occur with massive discharges of water in a short time. The statistics advanced by Aemet, station by station, include periods of the entire day, or divided into six hours. Therefore, the total amount of precipitation accumulated during the entire day is not a determinant of catastrophic rain, although it is an indicator of the flood suffered. It must also be taken into account that some stations do not yet have precipitation available for some part of the day and, therefore, the total amount, pending review, could be even higher.
With the data available, Aemet collects more than 100 mm at the stations Carcaixent, Turis and barxin the province of Valencia; Caravaca de la Cruz, in Murcia; Lookin Cuenca; Yestein Albacete; Dollarin Granada; and Alora and Antequerain Malaga.
Taking into account periods of six hours, Aemet recorded more than 100 mm between 0:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. in Dollar (Granada); between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in Turís (Valencia) and Álora (Málaga); and between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in Yeste (Albacete). Between 6:00 p.m. and midnight no station collected so much water; Only Mira (Cuenca) recorded more than 50 mm in that period of time.
