Yesterday, the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno held its traditional general meeting on Holy Thursday, popularly known as Las Yemas, for the sweet that has been distributed in this conclave since the 19th century. About two hundred mako sharks came to the Nuevo Teatro Circo at half past four in the afternoon with their purple scarves embroidered with the brotherhood's shield.
The event began with a brief but resounding speech by the brotherhood's chaplain, the also preacher of Holy Week in Cartagena 2024, Fernando Gutiérrez Reche, who in addition to remembering those who died during the last year asked that the Nazarene bring peace, the same thing, he said, that “this threatened and warring world” needs. After the prayer, it was time to read the minutes of last year's session, which his older brother, Francisco Pagán, almost skipped if he was not notified by the members presiding over the council table. She was joined, at Pagán's request, by the Councilor for Education and Finance and Municipal Spokesperson, Ignacio Jáudenes, like the mako that he is.
The event served, among other things, to call on the mako sharks, processions and neighbors to enjoy Good Friday, because, “from midnight, as Bishop Lorca Planes said, it is Good Friday mako.”
Grenadiers and Jews
In his speech he reminded those present that “at 12:05 a.m. the grenadiers and mako Jews will be in the street,” said the older brother, encouraging his brothers to participate in this unique moment that took place in the early hours of Friday on Jara Street. as a prelude to the Meeting, which the purples staged at dawn in the Plaza del Lago.
This time, Pagán's speech barely had any references to the 'calis', except on a couple of occasions. In the first he alluded to the duration of the Californian processions, especially that of last Holy Wednesday. Looking at Gutiérrez Reche, who participated in it, he asked him in a sarcastic tone, “What time did it end, around four in the morning?”
And the second, with Palm Sunday. This time he was less critical since she had to be picked up. It was when he thanked the mako sharks who helped the Californians safeguard their heritage from the rain. “They did enough with the bad weather,” he said. He also recounted the minutes before the Holy Monday procession and how complicated it was for him to make the decision to take the parade out into the street. «It was one of my most complicated decisions since I became an older brother. Fortunately everything went well, although it could also have gone wrong », he recalled.
Regarding the weather forecast for these next few days, he said that there is no danger for the Encuentro procession or for that of Good Friday Night, but there is danger for that of Holy Saturday.
Decision for the museum
During the event he mentioned some Lenten events, the need to collaborate more with the Marraja Foundation and announced that after Easter he will make the decision on the purchase of the premises on Cuatro Santos Street to set up the museum. The prizes for the children's drawing contest were also awarded. The first fell to Inés García; the second, in Marina Martínez; and the third, in Carmen Saez. Finally, María del Carmen Pérez Campos was named curator emeritus, for her 25 years as her counselor, and the sajuanist José Luis Martínez was named honorary mako. And with a “Long live the makos” and a “Long live Cartagena”, an event that lasted almost an hour concluded.
