The need to carry a physical Multi transport card to travel on the Madrid Metro or on any of the buses that operate in the region is over. Starting this Monday, November 18, the mobile application that allows you to recharge all the 10 trip vouchers available through a virtual card has been generally activated.
The system currently works only on phones with Android system, with the download of the Virtual Transport Card app (not to be confused with that of Transportation Cardwhich is used to recharge physical cards). Through this application, any user can acquire the Multi electronic card and connect it with their Google Wallet.
The steps to do so are as follows: first, the traveler must check that they have a version of their mobile phone that is Android 7.0 or higher (phones purchased from 2016 onwards) and also that their Google Wallet is activated or, if not, download it. in this link. It only works with devices that allow NFC transactions, an option currently available on most mobile phones.
Afterwards, you must download the aforementioned Virtual Transportation Card app in the Google application store and assign a credit card, from which the travel ticket purchases will be paid.
Next, the user has to select the type of bonus they want to buy and then click the buy button. confirm and pay for the transaction to complete.
Once the travel tickets have been loaded, it is necessary to insert the virtual Multi card into your Google Wallet following the instructions in the application.
From that moment on, you will have the card available to pay for your trips on the Metro or buses: the trips will be deducted and when the counter reaches zero you will have to recharge the card again.
The system chosen by the Community of Madrid to pay for public transport is a virtual translation of its current Multi model, which requires you to top up the ticket necessary to travel in each transport zone.
Other autonomous communities use more intuitive systems for the user, such as those that use wallet cards, with a balance that is discounted depending on the journey made, without the need to accumulate different bonuses depending on the areas to which you want to travel.
Zone subscriptions and iPhones, by 2025
After a testing period in which only a small group of users had access to it, the virtual Multi card is active for the combined tickets of 10 trips on EMT and Metro, tourist passes and the airport supplement on the suburban network .
At the moment its use is not available for iPhone phones nor can monthly transport passes be recharged. The Regional Transport Consortium assures that both options will also be available in 2025.
Finally, the Community of Madrid has assured that the download of this new application will be free for the next six months, although it has not indicated the price it will have after this period or the concepts for which an extra charge will be applied.
