A group of protesters from various associations for the right to housing broke into the headquarters of the Ministry of Social Rights in the capital this Tuesday to demand that the Government take measures against Caixabank evictions. The concentrates have delivered to a person in charge of the department a dossier with more than 50 cases of mortgagees, tenants and ‘squatters’ who live in Caixabank homes and its associated funds.
The objective of the concentration was to obtain the mediation of the ministry with the banking entity to unblock the negotiations and demand social rents. “We want all evictions to stop, and for La Caixa to negotiate social rents, without exclusions or pressures of any kind.”
Among the associations present at the concentration were several platforms for those affected by the mortgage and also unions of the city’s tenants. The State has a 17% stake in Caixabank and that is why they believe that the entity is “guilty” and the Government “responsible” for evicting families “with public money.”
The protesters have demanded from the first moment to speak with the Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy, to put pressure on the banking entity and come out with a scheduled meeting. After a few minutes of tension, the ministry workers have decided to register the dossier presented by the different entities participating in the concentration.
Among the protesters was Blanca, who was evicted a few months ago, and Pilar, whom Caixabank has tried to evict on four occasions despite being in a vulnerable situation and being a victim of gender violence. “We have tried to negotiate in many ways, there are families on the street because they do not want to sit with us,” the protesters denounced.
The security forces quickly rushed to the scene to warn the sixty protesters that they would be arrested if they did not vacate the building. Finally, after the delivery of the dossier and the commitment of the ministry workers to personally deliver the document to Minister Bustinduy, they were identified by the police and left the building, stating that they were leaving this Tuesday but that they were going to return.
