Since it was configured the parliamentary opposition In the British Parliament of the 18th century, politics in the institutions of the State is built on the premise that between the parliamentary majority and the opposition there are common points that entail a relationship of loyalty that benefits the State itself in the long run. That is why it is a hackneyed expression, but true, the statement that the opposition must be loyal to the State and the Government to the extent that the Government serves the State.
This reflection is relevant when seeing the maneuvers that the Spanish Popular Party is deploying in Brussels to prevent the European Parliament from positively evaluating Teresa Ribera as the future Vice President of the Commission and Commissioner responsible for the Environment. At the time of writing this comment, it is not known if Teresa Ribera will be evaluated this week or if the evaluation will be delayed one or two weeks, nor is the positive or negative result known.
The right prefers an inane Spain in Europe rather than deploying influence through a socialist Commissioner
In reality, we should not be surprised by this maneuver of the Spanish right. Last September 23 ABC published an editorial titled “Von der Leyen and incongruence”, where the President of the Commission was criticized for proposing Ribera as Vice President of the new Community College and ended the editorial with the following words:
“Ribera’s presence represents a guarantee for Pedro Sanchez that both the incursion of his Government into the capital of the private company Telephonethe rescue of Air Europa or the blocking of the Hungarian takeover Magyar Wagon on Talgo will not be questioned from Brussels by the disciplined socialist militant, who shouted ‘they will not pass!’ at a rally in Benalmádena, evoking the most famous slogan of the communist left of the Civil War” [sic].
This text deserved to be reproduced because it is a reflection of the irrational rage of the Spanish right that, to prevent a socialist from being Vice President of the Commission, the ABC He raises the specter of the Civil War, is in favor of a company with probable Russian connections taking over Talgo and prefers that one of the few Spanish airlines that is still in operation sink.
When politics is done with hatred and desire for revenge, understanding is impossible
Nor should it surprise us for any other reason. As you well remember Xavier Vidal-Folch in The Country (“The strange mania of using Europe against Spain”, November 13, 2024), two Spanish MEPs from the Popular Party, Dolors Montserrat and Esteban González Ponswere during the previous term of the European Parliament discrediting Spain in order to delegitimize the Government of President Sánchez.
The Popular Party prefers a dead Spain than a Spain governed by the left. It seems that we Spaniards should be happy that President Sánchez has achieved that the first Vice-Presidency of the Commission, the second position in the Community Government, corresponds to Spain, since it undoubtedly favors our country that of the twenty-seven Commissioners the one that has been assigned to Spain has more political weight than that of other countries such as Germany or France. But the Popular Party is only motivated by resentment for not occupying the Government.
Let’s add another circumstance. As we have seen in the editorial of ABCthe right prefers an inane Spain in Europe rather than deploying influence through a socialist Commissioner. This means that to prevent the appointment of Teresa Ribera he People’s Party I thought of using any reason or pretext. But now the pretext is particularly petty, which is to accuse Rivera of the Valencian disasters that have a culprit, Carlos Mazón. When politics is done with hatred and desire for revenge, understanding is impossible.
