The Los Italianos Bridge, in the town of Barreda, reopened to traffic this Monday after two months cut off in one of the directions due to the execution of the remodeling and expansion of the infrastructure works, works included in the project to improve the road between Duález (Torrelavega) and Viveda (Santillana del Mar) carried out by the Cantabrian Government.
The Minister of Development, Roberto Media, together with the mayors of Torrelavega, Javier López Estrada, and of Santillana del Mar, Sara Izquierdo, has visited the new infrastructure, in which The path for bicycles and pedestrians has been expanded on one of the banksand has highlighted the coordination of public administrations to minimize the effects on residents during the execution of the works and finish them within the planned deadlines, as reported by the Government.

In this sense, the counselor has apologized to the neighbors for the damages caused by the execution of the work, which has also coincided with the construction of the auxiliary railway track.
Media has recalled that the construction of the Duález-Viveda road It will entail a “very high” investment, after the modification of the initial budget for the removal of “non-hazardous” contaminated waste in one of the Sniace plots, which has made the work 2.2 million more expensive, to exceed 8 million euros.
As he has pointed out, The Government’s objective is to complete the work on the new road at the end of July 2025, given the current progress of the work.
Media has added that work will now begin on another section of this project, on the bridge over the Corrino stream, in Santillana del Mar, at the other end of the road in the aforementioned municipality. Thus, the concreting of this section is expected to be carried out at the beginning of December.
For their part, both mayors have valued the scope of this work in Santillana del Mar and Torrelavega. Izquierdo has pointed out that it is a “considerable improvement” and has thanked the counselor for his involvement in the execution of this infrastructure.
For his part, López Estrada has indicated that It is one of the most important works for the municipality and it has been assessed that the work and traffic cuts that have affected the Los Italianos Bridge have been completed within the scheduled time, as it is an “especially sensitive” section.
This bridge over the Saja-Besaya river, about 160 meters long, had been closed for two months in one direction of traffic, between Barreda and the Sniace sports area, in order to be able to carry out the expansion of the track by eliminating the old railway line that runs parallel from Sniace.
To carry out these works, a temporary screen had to be installed to secure the catenary and for several days the works were carried out at night so as not to affect railway traffic between Torrelavega and Santander.
