It seemed the unexpected crossover between Fast & Furious and Two meters underground. The Local Police of O Porriño (Pontevedra) carried out the Operation Caba -named in honor of a deceased colleague- an intervention aimed at deactivating a “massive” concentration of vehicles and people in the Oceanis-Cataboi industrial estate. Among those involved, along with vehicles more than twenty years old and modern cars, the presence of a hearse stood out.
As reported by the City Council through a statement collected by Europa Press, the event was called through social networks and there were driving exhibitions and illegal races, which generated “a serious risk for public safety.”
For several weeks, the authorities detected an increase in the concentration of cars and attendees at the polygon on Saturday nights.
Initially, as reported, these meetings were “simple gatherings,” but over time they evolved into “illegal races and dangerous maneuvers,” such as spins and starts that compromised the safety of “almost a thousand people present.”
The operation, in honor of the deceased local police officer Manuel Cabaleiro Martínez, was coordinated by the Court of 1st Instance and Instruction number 1 of O Porriño. An extensive police device was established that included the use of drones and other technical means to document violations.
Drivers investigated
At 12:55 a.m. on October 13, the police unexpectedly closed all access to the industrial estate, forcing vehicles to exit through a single authorized passage, where exhaustive inspections were carried out. As a result of the operation, five drivers were investigated for the alleged commission of a crime against road safety (reckless driving).
In addition, nine drivers face administrative complaints, with penalties of 500 euros and the loss of 6 points on their license. More than 20 infractions against the General Vehicle Regulations were registered, as well as complaints for driving without insurance and without a seat belt.
Investigations revealed that these types of concentrations are taking place in several municipalities in the region and in the neighboring country, with organizers implementing surveillance measures to detect police presence.
hearse vehicle
Among the vehicles involved in these illegal races were found from cars that were more than 20 years old to modern vehicles, even involving a hearse.
Those investigated were summoned before the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 1 of O Porriño, where four of them accepted the prison sentence and the withdrawal of their driving license requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, pending their appearance with their designated lawyer.
