An expired bank card cannot be simply thrown away; it must be cut before that. On December 26, Peter Gusyatnikov, senior managing partner of the law firm PG Partners, spoke about this.
In a conversation with the agency “Prime»The expert explained that cutting the card is necessary to prevent fraudsters from gaining access to the information stored on the card, for example, the account number. The information contains digital and alphabetic codes, a magnetic stripe and holograms – and they must be destroyed.
“If you do not intend to use the card anymore, then the account to which it is linked must be closed, especially if the card is a credit card,” Gusyatnikov said.
Otherwise, the lawyer explained, the conditions for servicing the account can be extended automatically and then you will have to pay for its service. And if there is no money in the account, fines will be charged.
In addition, the expert advised to pay attention to the fact that upon dismissal from work, you will have to pay for servicing the former salary card yourself, so immediately after leaving work, the card must be closed immediately.
Finally, when closing the card, it is worth getting a certificate from the bank about the absence of debt, advised Gusyatnikov.
Earlier, on December 8, Ekaterina Semerikova, head of research at the Skolkovo-NES Center for the Study of Financial Technologies and Digital Economy, said that the presence of unused bank cards for a client can lead to unwanted commissions, imposing services and risks of data leakage. So, in particular, the owners of “passive” cards do not take into account the fact that their personal data continues to be stored by the bank. Serious risks arise in the event of a personal data leak, which attackers can find out, the expert said.
