The torrential rain that fell in the successive episodes of DANA in the Peninsula has been destructive water with hardly any impact on the increase in water reserves, even less to alleviate the deficit due to the prolonged drought of recent months.
In the case of the Andalusian Mediterranean basindespite the rebound in recent weeks, water reserves for human use are at 27% of their capacity, five points above the end of last month, but still well below the 41% average of the last decade for this time of year. In the case of the Júcar basin, discharges in recent weeks have brought reserves to 46%, ten points more than at the end of last month, and another many points above the average for the month of November.
Water reserves in Spain are at 51%, including reservoirs for hydroelectric use. Reservoirs for consumptive use, that is, for human and agricultural use, are at 45%. Reserves for consumptive use have grown by 0.44 points compared to last week, according to calculations based on the latest data from the General Directorate of Water, dated November 12, 2024. Reserves are above the average of the last ten years, situated at 41% for the month of November.
Water reserves in hydrographic basins
There are big differences between the different hydrographic basins. While the reserves of water for consumption in the basins of Galicia Costa, Eastern Cantabrian, Internal basins of the Basque Country, Western Cantabrian, Ebro and Tinto, Odiel and Piedras are above 70% of their capacity, while the Segura basins , the Guadalete-Barbate and the Andalusian Mediterranean basin are below 30%.
The following map shows the current water reserves for consumptive use by hydrographic basin, with information on the average for the same time of year and the variation with respect to the previous week.
The situation remains below the average of the last decade, especially in some basins. For this time of year, the reserves for human and agricultural use of the Internal basins of Catalonia should be at 61%, according to the average of the last ten years; instead, they are at 33%.
The following graph shows the evolution of water reserves for consumptive or consumption use in Spain and in each of the hydrographic basins.
Water reserves in reservoirs
The following map shows the current water reserves for consumptive use per reservoir, with information on the average for the same time of year and the variation compared to last week.
The evolution of autumn precipitation will make it possible to face the water shortage next summer.
