He King stated this Monday in the Royal Alcazar of Seville that the relationship between Spain and Ibero-America must be “oriented towards the present” with the objective of “building a better future.” Don Felipe made these statements after collecting the Extraordinary Ibero-American Prize ‘Torre del Oro’in an event also attended by the president of the Board, Juanma Moreno; the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo; the mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz; the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Seville, Francisco Herrero; and the president of the Cajasol Foundation, Antonio Pulido, among other authorities.
In his speech HM The King wanted to express his “deep satisfaction” for receiving this award, at the Real Alcázar, to which he feels very linked “since he was a child”, and a distinction, furthermore, that underlines the relationship he has maintained the Crown with Latin America.
For this reason, he wanted to highlight his recognition to the Chamber of Commerce, the Cajasol Foundation and the chambers of commerce on both sides of the Atlantic. Furthermore, Don Felipe highlighted the names of those who had received this award before him, such as Enrique Iglesias, Andrés Pastrana and Felipe Gonzálezas well as an institution such as the Royal Academy of Language.
HM The King recalled the beginning of his personal relationship with Latin America, with his assistance as Prince of Asturias, in which he was his first official trip in 1983to the 450th anniversary of the founding of Cartagena de Indias or his journey as a midshipman on the Juan Sebastián Elcano, in which he stopped at several ports on the other side of the Atlantic.
An “initiative and formative” journey that the Princess of Asturias will undertake in a few months, where she will meet people and cultures “without which our own culture would not be understood.”
The award, finally, recognizes, in the opinion of the monarch, one of the «hallmarks of the Crown, which is none other than “helping to strengthen and multiply the ties of mutual knowledge, cooperation, solidarity and affection with Latin America.”
«I could not recognize myself as I am now, honestly, without that Ibero-American background, which is not only a determining element in my way of seeing the world and understanding our (Spain’s) place in it, but also a vocation to put into practice our brotherhood, to understand and assume our shared history, and to thus gain orA better future for all our citizensachieving greater cooperation. Because Latin America, added Don Felipe, «invites us to make our life a great encounter».
For his part, the president of the Chamber of Commerce highlighted that the Torre del Oro is the «living emblem of greatest significance in the history of our city« and which symbolizes »wealth« and »meeting point« of cultures and economies from both sides of the Atlantic.
In that sense, Herrero considered that the Spanish Crown “It has been the best illustration of the better social and cultural meeting and collaboration of all the peoples of Spain and Latin America«, so the jury »unanimously agreed« to hand it over to Felipe VI. »It is a great honor that you have accepted this award«, he added, which shows the »confidence« of the Crown »in the work of the chambers of commerce in Spain and Latin America«.
