The Insurance Compensation Consortium has already received more than 116,000 requests for compensation from those affected by the DANA that hit the Levant peninsula last week.
The information was given by the general director of Insurance, José Antonio Fernández, at a press conference in Moncloa after the crisis committee meeting. The figure is extraordinary, the director explained, because it is equivalent to what is usually received in a year for extraordinary events. Furthermore, on some days there were the same complaints as those caused by the Lorca earthquake in total or the eruption of the La Palma volcano, according to Servimedia.
Of the 116,000 claims received, around 60% correspond to vehicles and approximately 31% are for homes. Regarding the amount of these claims, in turn, Fernández did not want to give a figure, since “it would not be exact or close” due to the industrial damages and the volume of cars affected that is unknown.
The General Director of Insurance has explained that measures are being taken to improve the assessment of damages. In the case of vehicles with a total loss, “it is planned to increase the valuation of the sales value tables by 20% for the damage value and not subtract the amount of the remains of the vehicle, which is usually the norm,” he said. advanced, and in the case of business insurance, mainly for businesses located in low-lying areas and industries, “the 7% deductible is eliminated” for those cases in which the turnover is less than six million. The compensation covers vehicles that are fully insured, as well as homes with multi-risk policies, and insured companies, businesses and commercial premises. The General Director of Insurance has also highlighted that the Consortium covers based on the coverage established in the policies.
On the other hand, he has reported that around 800 experts are currently working on the ground, a number that will be doubled next week. He also recalled, in turn, that the period of seven days to claim from the time the incident occurs does not apply to DANA and the Consortium will attend to all claims, although he pointed out that there are issues that complicate the expert opinion, such as ” “Many affected people do not know where their vehicle is located.”
