This Saturday, May 11, the National Electoral Institute (INE), announced the reincorporation of 36 thousand 355 flyers abroad after the complaints between the candidates for the presidency of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum and Xochitl Galvez.
“This means that Mexicans residing abroad whose clarification procedures were found to be appropriate or that were corrected, will be able to exercise their right to vote in the modality they initially chose: postal, electronically over the Internet or in person,” explained the INE through an official statement.
The controversy began on April 13, when the National Electoral Institute exposed “the inadmissibility” of 39,724 records of Mexican citizens abroad, sparking several critics of the candidates, accusing the organization of preventing the participation of Mexicans outside the country in the elections, especially those who had chosen to exercise their right to vote through the Internet.
For his part, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, denounced that due to “obstacles” and “bureaucratism”, those who “have the right to vote” abroad are very few.
This is how the Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE), announced on April 22 a record of 227,112 Mexicans who could vote in the elections on July 2, 2024 in 23 centers that have been installed in the United States, Canada, France and Spain.
However, the National Electoral Institute clarified that 3,350 records will remain excluded from the foreign list because they are exposed in “cases of alleged irregularities.”
Among these, INE highlighted the differences between the signing of the copy of your voter card and the handwritten signature, the presentation of irregular signatures or the presentation of proof of address that is altered or with an address in Mexico.
Likewise, there were those who, after a visit by electoral officials, indicated that they did not request registration abroad.
It should be noted that next Sunday June 2, Mexico will make history with the largest elections on record, since a total of 97 million people have been invited to renew 20,375 federal positions, including the presidency of the country.
