Getaways and trips in Spain are a perfect way to learn about the traditions and culture of the different regions of our country. There are impressive places that stand out for combining their historical heritage with their natural environment. With this in mind, the National Assembly of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain was born in 2011 to qualify with a quality badge those places that comply with specific regulations.
This year, the new municipalities that will become part of this list in its twelfth edition will be presented and, for the first time, this long-awaited rural tourism event will take place in Aragon, more specifically in Aínsa, Huesca.
It will be this November 23 when 70 municipal delegationswith their mayors at the helm, will meet in what is one of the most important towns in rural and heritage tourism in all of Aragon.
Aínsa joined this network in 2015, but this is not her only achievement. At an international level it has achieved a lot of recognition, especially after the World Tourism Organization added the name of this town to its list of Best Tourism Villages 2024.
It is a medieval town that captivates with its authenticity and beauty. This town, nestled between the Ara and Cinca rivers, has preserved its essence over the centuries, which has earned it being declared Historical-Artistic Complex in 1965.
The old town, with a medieval layout, unfolds on a hill with spectacular views of the Pyrenean landscape. Without a doubt the heart of the place is the Plaza Mayora large porticoed space that becomes the center of social and cultural life.
The Aínsa Castle, an 11th century fortress, today a cultural space where many events, exhibitions and the Ecomuseum of Pyrenean Fauna are held, dominates the entire landscape and is a symbol of the medieval past of the Aragonese people.
The history of Aínsa is steeped in legends, the most famous being that of the Sobrarbe Cross, a Christian element that, according to tradition, miraculously appeared on a tree during a battle between Christians and Muslims. This event, represented on the town’s coat of arms, is commemorated with the Morisma Festival, a theatrical event that relives those times of struggle.
The natural environment surrounding Aínsa is equally impressive, with the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park within walking distance. This protected natural area offers hiking routes that allow you to explore glacial valleys, waterfalls and mountains, becoming a paradise for nature lovers.
The requirements to be part of the network of Most Beautiful Towns in Spain
According to the association’s regulations, the names that appear on this list, apart from their own merits, do so because they have less than 15,000 inhabitants and because of certified natural or architectural heritage. Furthermore, the town must be committed to maintaining and conserving them to promote the conservation of these spaces and the harmony of the municipality with the conservation of the town with the surrounding green areas.
