The Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, has assured that the improvements in the Cercanías railway service will begin to be noticed in 2026, when the actions on the track are advanced and the new trains arrive.
Gómez de Diego detailed this Sunday in an interview with RNE, collected by Europa Press, that “more than 900 million euros” of the 1,400 contemplated in the Cantabria Commuter Plan have already been mobilized. “In 2026 all these improvements will be absolutely visible, because the majority will be carried out, and now we must have a little more patience in the face of the inconvenience caused by works that are being very complex and that are being carried out while maintaining the use of infrastructure,” he said.
For the delegate, The Cercanías network is “very important” for all users, which is why the Government of Spain, Adif and Renfe are carrying out a “total renovation.”
Also in railway matters, Gómez de Diego has talked about the AVE to Reinosa and has valued the award of the drafting of the construction project of the section that will reach Cantabria from Alar del Rey for an amount of 15 million euros. “Although the PP constantly wants to introduce noise into the good news that comes to Cantabria, there is no longer a doubt that the connection with High Speed is a reality,” he added.

In his opinion, in the arrival of the AVE, as in many other infrastructures and actions, there have been “many historical demands” from Cantabria and they have begun to materialize since 2018 and also with “a significant level of investment”, both in railway matters and in roads.
Regarding road projects, the delegate has pointed out the “complexity” of the work on the third lane of the A-67 between Polanco and Santa Cruz de Bezana, an action budgeted at 172.9 million euros and with 61 months of execution. which, furthermore, “will be done while maintaining circulation in both directions.”
“It is an impressive work and the challenge is to ensure that there is the least impact on the main communication route between Santander and Torrelavega”, has indicated.
Furthermore, regarding the Sierrapando-Barreda continuity branch, in the connection of the A-67 and the A-8, he has assured that the work “is going very well” and has announced that next week the filling will begin on the two tunnels that are already “perfectly assembled and completed.” “Next summer the entire continuity branch will be in place, so it will be a more fulfilled commitment,” he added.
Gómez de Diego has also spoken out again about the La Pasiega intermodal station and has asked the Cantabrian president, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, “to be coherent” because, as she said, she herself demanded that the regional government promote the intermodal “when “He was an opposition leader.”
“The Government of Cantabria has support from the Government of Spain. It has been said that they will continue collaborating, but what Cantabria has to do is lead the project and start working on drafting the specifications for the construction project of the intermodal station,” said the delegate, who recalled that the national Executive has already allocated “half of the investment, with 20 of the 40 million, to the logistics center project.”
