The IES Francisco Salzillo de Alcantarilla will represent the Region in the national phase of the CanSat 2024 Challenge, an event promoted by the European Space Agency (Esero). This test, aimed at high school students, consists of building a real satellite, with its main electrical, communications and sensor systems, within the volume and shape of a soda can, which has to fulfill a specific mission. After launching and recovering the satellite, the participants must defend with the data captured from the ground the results of the mandatory mission and the specific missions designed by themselves.
This regional phase, organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Universities, Research and Mar Menor, through the Seneca Foundation, had the participation of a total of 89 students, grouped into eight teams that competed for the title of regional champion and two others who did so as guests.
The eight participating teams were 'Molisat 1', from IES Cañada de las Eras de Molina de Segura; 'Riders of Space', from the IES Francisco Salzillo de Alcantarilla; 'Ecosat', from the IES Manuel Tárraga Escribano of San Pedro del Pinatar; 'Astrea', 'Stella Nova', 'Rocket Lemon', 'Kode Space' and 'Paltas Space', from MMMAcademy Academia Tecnológica de Alcantarilla. The two guests were 'Astra', from the NGO formed by associations for people with physical and organic disabilities in the Region of Murcia (FAMDIF/COCEMFE) and 'Komet', from MMMAcademy Academia Tecnológica de Alcantarilla.
The winning team was 'Jinetes del Espacio' from the IES Francisco Salzillo de Alcantarilla, which will represent the Region of Murcia in the national phase to be held on this same stage on May 16 and 17.
The national phase will determine the group that will travel to Noordwijk (Netherlands) to visit the facilities of the European Space Agency, where 2,500 aerospace engineers and scientists work, and participate in the 'Space Engineer for a Day' program at the European level, which will have take place on June 20 and 21 at the European Space Research and Technology Center, where the Agency's missions are designed.
The Minister of the Environment, Universities, Research and Mar Menor, Juan María Vázquez, highlighted this Saturday, together with the chief colonel of the Alcantarilla Air Base, Alberto José Lens, that “the tireless work of the Séneca Foundation, which is in charge of “Coordinating the educational projects of Esero in the Autonomous Community has allowed an increase in participants in this third edition, promoting STEM vocations related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”
«We are very grateful to Chief Colonel José Lens, who has opened the doors of the Alcantarilla Air Base to us to be able to host a championship that, without a doubt, promotes learning, develops skills and methodology in the work that we have been able to see and that are surpassed every year,” added the counselor.
